What’s actually in it?
Scan a barcode or search a name. Spoil tells you what a product contains, how much of it can be there, and what the published research says about each part.
Presence is not a dose
Every other scanner marks an additive as present and stops there. A label bounds how much can be in the pack. Spoil reads that bound and scales the penalty to it.
Monosodium glutamate, in a bag of Doritos
25 → 8.75
The label caps everything after “less than 2% of”, so the most that can be here is 2% of the bag. Open Food Facts puts it at 14.3%.
Titanium dioxide, under the same clause
100 → 100
EFSA set no acceptable daily intake for it in 2021, because genotoxicity could not be ruled out. With no threshold, a ceiling has nothing to argue against and the penalty stands whole.
How to read a score
Four axes, each scored out of 100 on its own terms, combined at weights you control. Every product page draws this chart with that product’s real numbers.
Column width is the weight you chose. Column height is that axis out of 100. The shaded area is the score, so nothing on the page is asserted that you cannot measure off it.
Search
By product, brand, or the number under a barcode. Every result carries a score computed the same way.
Scan
Point a camera at a barcode. Decoding happens in the browser; only the number is looked up.
Additive register
116 E-numbers with the published position each one is scored on, and who published it.
Method
The whole calculation, written out. Every threshold, every weight, and what it cannot tell you.
Why it is open
- A score you cannot inspect is an opinion with a number on it.
- The scoring code, the thresholds and the additive register are all in the repository. Disagree with a judgement and you are disagreeing with a file you can open.
- The data is a commons.
- Products come from Open Food Facts, which is crowdsourced and openly licensed. When something is missing, the fix is to add it, and that fixes it for everyone.
- Nothing about you leaves the device.
- No account, no tracking of what you look up, no profile on a server. Lookups pass through this site only to identify the app to Open Food Facts and to share one cached copy across everyone who looks up the same thing.
- It reports, it does not prescribe.
- Findings are stated with their sources and your own profile produces the verdict. Nothing here is medical advice.
